18-year-old Venezuelan youngster is signed by LAFC

The future of Venezuelan soccer looks brightly at David Martínez, a brilliant gem in the team. Despite having a relatively unknown name nationally as well as internationally, his outstanding performance for the South American U-17 team earned him recognition and a spot in several clubs' portfolios.

As of January 31st, LAFC announced that they have signed winger David Martínez, a Venezuelan international, from Monagas SC.

With a 2028 option, the underrated prodigy, who recently turned eighteen, is bound to the MLS through 2027. He has been rostered for the U22 Initiative.

“David is one of the most sought-after young players in South America, with an impressive amount of experience despite his age,” LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington said in a release announcing the news. “We are incredibly excited about David’s potential and his future at LAFC.”

According to The Athletic, Martinez, who joined Monagas SC of Venezuela's first division as a senior team player at the age of sixteen, was paid close to $3.5 million.

Martinez distinguished himself throughout the previous two years from prospects worldwide who were born in 2006. Martinez played 38 games with Monagas, 24 of which were starts. In all competitions, including a few Copa Libertadores matches, Martinez scored six goals and assisted on five more. In addition, he led Venezuela's U-17 team to its first World Cup qualification in ten years. At sixteen, he was a member of the U-20 team. And in a June exhibition match against Guatemala, he made his debut for the men's national team.
