2024 Fantasy Football Preview: Top Running Backs

Following my last article where I discussed the top quarterbacks for the 2024 Fantasy Football Season, this piece will focus in on the running back position, which can make or break your title hopes.

1.Christian McCaffrey, 49ers - 2023’s offensive player of the year was easily the best non QB in the NFL last season, including fantasy. He provides so much out of the backfield, including passing ability, as he had a game last season that consisted of 1 passing, 1 rushing, and 1 receiving TD. McCaffrey will be a virtual guarantee to go #1 in most leagues, so he is a no-brainer at this ranking.

2.Breece Hall, Jets - The 3rd year man out of Iowa State came back with vengeance following a torn ACL that halted his rookie season. Despite the injury to Rodgers in WK1, Hall was 2nd in most PPR fantasy leagues. Following a season with essentially 1K rushing and 600 receiving yards, expect Hall to challenge McCaffrey for the RB1 spot come the end of the fantasy season.

3.Bijan Robinson, Falcons - Despite going in the first round in a lot of drafts last season, the Longhorn RB didn’t live up to fantasy expectations his first year in Atlanta. Most of that falls on former head coach Arthur Smith, and with a new regime in town, Bijan is primed for a breakout campaign. Like the two names above him, Robinson offers a receiving ability that only a handful of guys can do. With a brand new coaching staff, new QB, and more touches, Bijan is bound to average 17 ppg this year.

4.Jahmyr Gibbs, Lions - Detroit was not eager to get the Alabama running back a boatload of carries through the first month of the season, but Gibbs ranked as the RB3 in total points from Week 7 - Week 18. With no training wheels on Gibbs for the first half of the season this go around, and his young legs, I wouldn’t be surprised if he finishes top among running backs in all-purpose yards.

5.Kyren Williams, Rams - Every single fantasy expert site I look at has Williams outside their top 5 running backs in 2024, and I am struggling to find a good reason why. The only good argument I see is the addition of Michigan RB Blake Corum, but even then Williams is still going to receive over 70% of the touches. He ranked 2nd in PPG among RBs, and 4th overall despite not playing in 5 games. If you can snag Williams in the late 2nd, or early 3rd round, don’t miss out, as he could win you your league.

Those are my top 5 rankings, some names that just missed out include Jonathan Taylor, Joe Mixon, Saquon Barkley, Derrick Henry, and Isiah Pacheco. Having 2 great running backs will give teams an increased chance of making a deep fantasy playoff run, and whiffing on an RB could be the reason you come in last.
