Further Despicable

Illumination's sixth Despicable Me film has hit theaters, here is a minute review on where we are in a franchise ruled by both the Grus and the Minions.

In the wake of America's Independence Day, fans are also celebrating the reprisal of Illumination's most profitable cast. Two films, Minions and Despicable Me 3 each grossed over $1 billion (with Despicable Me 2 and The Rise of Gru trailing barely behind), which have made it the highest grossing animated film franchise ever, all thanks to the show-stealing minions.

For some unexplainable reason (chock it up to creative design), these 3ft, mischievous, banana-obsessed creatures have attracted hundreds of millions of fans worldwide, putting them all sorts of merchandise such as magnets, outfits, and even food! Which is not to say, of course, that other leading cast has had its impact.

Why is Gru such a popular, loved character? Is it the peculiarity of his outfits, stature, and especially, accent? Is it his fathering of the three adopted girls (whose personalities match the minions Bob, Stuart, and Kevin respectively; not a coincidence), alongside the new Gru Jr? It's probably a mixture of it all, spiced up with the absurdity of his co-cast members, especially his respective antagonists throughout the series, with an antihero cherry on top. This world is so particularly weird that we needed two prequels to even understand what these beings are!

Now, we see Steve Carell reprising the possibly-14.5ft-tall dad once again with the same inexplicable "quasi-Russian" accent. The franchise is headed, from what we know, in a predictable, straightforward, consistent, and profitable direction.
