Minnesota Vikings inform RB Alexander Mattison he is being released

After spending five seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, with only one season as the primary back, Alexander Mattison has been informed of his release.

Mattison served as the backup to Dalvin Cook for the initial four years of his career. But when Cook departed last year, Mattison had a significant opportunity to demonstrate his capability as the leading back. However, despite signing a two-year contract with the Vikings at that time, he now finds himself becoming a free agent again after failing to seize the starting role.

During his tenure as the primary back, Mattison managed just 700 rushing yards on 180 carries, averaging a modest 3.9 yards per attempt, and failed to secure any rushing touchdowns.

Throughout the season, he never surpassed the 100-yard mark in a single game and struggled, accumulating fewer than 50 yards in 11 out of 16 games played.

Due to Mattison's struggles in the running game, the Vikings found themselves ranked 29th in the league for rushing offense, recording only 1,553 yards and a mere seven rushing touchdowns, the lowest in the league, with three of those touchdowns being from QB Joshua Dobbs.

Now, with Mattison's being released, Ty Chandler stands as the sole returning running back with notable yardage from the previous season. Chandler logged 102 carries for 461 yards across 17 games, taking over starting duties for the final four matchups in place of Mattison. The rest of the running backs on the roster combined for only 20 rushing yards.
