MLB Tier List Half Way Through 2024

The baseball season is officially halfway completed and on July 1st they’re quite a few teams that stand out from the rest, while a good portion of MLB teams are all hovering around the .500 mark. Today I will be giving out my tier list rankings for all 30 teams with half the season left to go. The top tier will be World Series contenders, followed by the postseason, then 50/50, and at the bottom, we have the trash tier.

World Series Contenders (S) - Baltimore Orioles (53-31), Philadelphia Phillies (55-29), Los Angeles Dodgers (52-33), New York Yankees (54-32). These teams have the four best records in baseball, and it is easy to see why. 3 of 4 have top 10 payrolls in baseball, while the Orioles are all the way down at 25th in total team salary. Unsupringily these teams also have the best run differential in baseball, and will all be looking to participate in the fall classic.

Postseason Teams (A) - Cleveland Guardians (52-30), Atlanta Braves (46-36), Milwaukee Brewers (50-34), Seattle Mariners (47-39), Minnesota Twins (47-37), Houston Astros (42-41), San Diego Padres (46-42). The next grouping of clubs are either atop of their respective division or have a wild card spot as of July 1st. The only club in this tier that is not 5+ games over .500 are the Astros, and after a disastrous start, Houston is 9-1 in their last 10 and looks to be heating up at the perfect time.

50/50 Tier (B) - Boston Red Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, Kansas City Royals, New York Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, Tampa Bay Rays, Texas Rangers. Eight teams that will have incredibly tough decisions to make come the trade deadline, should they rebuild or try to make a push at October baseball? Both teams that made the 2023 World Series are in this group and have been off to extremely underwhelming starts in 2024. It should be incredibly interesting to see what these ball clubs in this group do come late July.

Not Good (D) - Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals, Toronto Blue Jays, San Francisco Giants. Many teams in this tier had postseason aspirations at the start of the year, but inconsistent play and stars regressing have led to all of these clubs having sub-.500 records. The Blue Jays and Cubs will be the most interesting going forward as they have a lot of talent that may get dealt at the deadline.

Garbage (F) - Chicago White Sox (24-62), Colorado Rockies (28-55), Los Angeles Angels (36-47), Oakland Athletics (30-56), Miami Marlins (30-54). The bottom of the barrel sees teams that have absolutely no shot of making a run in the second half of the year and will be looking to trade their high-end talent. The White Sox have the worst record in baseball and are currently shopping star outfielder Luis Robert Jr, and SP Garett Crochett. Most of the teams in this group having an awful MLB squad, with not much talent in their farm systems.

Those are my rankings for the MLB Tier List halfway through the 2024 season, let me know your rankings and if you think I put teams in their wrong spot.
