Report: Mutual Interest between Mets and JD Martinez

The Mets are atop one of multiple teams having interest in former Dodgers outfielder, J.D. Martinez.

The Mets view Martinez as a potential solution to address the persistent problem of providing protection for their star cleanup hitter, Pete Alonso. However, other teams, such as the Angels, are also in the mix for the talented hitter.

The Mets intend to utilize a rotation of players like Mark Vientos, DJ Stewart, and Starling Marte at the designated hitter position. Bringing in Martinez, who hit 33 home runs along with 103 RBIs for the Dodgers last season, would provide New York with a clear everyday option for that role. However, any agreement would incur a 110% tax, as the Mets are anticipated to surpass the fourth Competitive Balance Tax threshold of $297 million for this season.

The Marlins have also expressed interest in MArtinez, as reported by journalist Craig Mish. While they might face financial challenges compared to the Mets or Angels, Miami holds significance for Martinez as it is his hometown.

There are words that there are other teams in the mix as well, but this teams are presenting "low ball" offers in case the market for J.D. doesn't re-develop.

It's also worth mentioning that Martinez did turn down roughly $15 million from the Giants earlier this offseason, and although it's not all about the money, it is no guarantee he will see any other offers close or more than that.

With the Mets losing Kodai Senga for at least the beginning of the season, adding J.D. Martinez will certainly help them reach the goal of winning a World Series come October.
