Ronel Blanco throws first no hitter of ‘24 season in 8th start

In only his 8th career start, Ronel Blanco, the right-handed pitcher for the Houston Astros, etches his name in history by throwing the first no-hitter of the 2024 season.

Blanco showcased his dominance by striking out seven batters and issuing just two walks during the Astros' commanding 10-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night. Despite making his Major League debut at the age of 28, the 30-year-olds climb to the starting rotation was warranted by injuries sideliningJustin Verlander and José Urquidy.

Although Blanco faced an early challenge, walking the first batter he encountered, he swiftly settled into a rhythm, retiring an impressive 26 consecutive Blue Jays. As the game progressed into the ninth inning, a two-out walk to George Springer prompted Astros manager Espada to prepare a reliever, and catcher Yainer Diaz offered Blanco a momentary breather with a visit to the mound. Blanco then faced Vladimir Guerrero Jr., managing to induce a crucial groundout to second base on his 105th pitch, sealing the remarkable no-hit performance.

Quckly after the final out, Blanco's emotions overflowed as he spotted his mother in the stands. With a heartfelt gesture, he motioned her to join him on the field, their embrace symbolizing a journey filled with sacrifices and unwavering support. Reflecting on his humble beginnings, Blanco's path to success included balancing a part-time job at a car wash in his native Dominican Republic to provide for his beloved mother, Maria, before catching the Astros' attention and securing his place in baseball history.

It’s been a very long road traveled for me, a lot of ups and downs... a lot of falls and me getting back up,” Blanco said through his interpreter. “But I think all of that has been worth it for me to be able to get to this moment.”

Blanco, who was a former infielder turned pitcher at just 18, throws his first career no hitter and just the 17th in Astros history.
