The problem with the Phoenix Suns

The Phoenix Suns had very high expectations coming into the 2023-24 season. After acquiring Bradley Beal from the Wizards, they formed a big three of Beal, Kevin Durant and Devin Booker. Many thought this trio would be a true contender for a title, and they were all wrong.

One problem the Suns have had since last season was a lack of depth. They didn’t put much effort towards their bench unit. Everything was relying on the success of Durant, Booker and Beal. The front office had no clue what they were doing, especially with Beal. He has a no trade clause in his contract and he’s owed a boatload of money over the next few years. Not only that, they gave away so much draft capital for him that they don’t have a pick until 2031. They mortgaged their future on a team that got swept first round.

In order to get back on track, the Suns might have to trade either Durant or Booker. This may sound outlandish, but it has to occur. They need assets in order to get anything going for their future. This current constructed team has already proven they cannot compete for a championship. Trading Durant to a win-now team for future first round picks is ideal, but don’t be surprised if Booker asks out as well.

The Suns are in a major hole as a franchise. They should be a valuable lesson to other organizations that star power simply isn’t enough. You need to have a well rounded team in order to win NBA championships. Big threes are perfectly fine, but there needs to be something outside of that. Phoenix did not listen to this advice, and now they are paying the ultimate price.
