Born and raised in Gate City, Virginia, Mac McClung was destined to make noise globally as a high schooler, showcasing extraordinary jumping ability and an inspiring underdog narrative. Undersized, underrated, and coming from a small hometown, Mac embraced the underdog spirit from the beginning.
His journey was far from easy, and all he could do was wholeheartedly dedicate himself to his craft. Mac captured the internet's attention in 2017 with unprecedented, jaw-dropping dunks, leaving everyone eager to know more about this rising star. Commencing his dunking journey in his sophomore year of high school, Mac was set on improving, focusing much of his training on enhancing his vertical leap in his home basement gym, guided by his father. Recognizing that being an undersized and underrated talent he knew that his journey would require a standout attribute. Mac honed in on his unparalleled jumping ability and continued to improve this special trait that he possessed.
Mac's high school mixtape stands as one of the most impressive and widely viewed of all time. With support from various media outlets like Overtime, Mac quickly became a household name in the high school hoops scene. Whether facing the worst or the best teams in the state, Mac consistently attracted sold-out crowds, packing every high school gym he played in.
Despite the hype, Mac didn't quite reach the four or five-star level coming out of high school, earning only a three-star rating. However, he had several options for his next-level play and ultimately chose Georgetown, where he was instantly doubted and many thought he would never see the court. Proving everyone wrong, Mac's freshman year, we saw him averaging 13.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2 assists per game, leading all freshman in the Big East in scoring and earning a spot on the Big East All-Freshman Team. In his sophomore year, injuries limited him to 21 games, yet he maintained an impressive average of 15.1 points, 2.4 assists, and 1.4 steals.
After two successful years at Georgetown, Mac decided to transfer to Texas Tech. In his junior year debut, he scored 20 points in a blowout win against Northwestern State, and ultimately finished the season with averages of 15.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.1 assists. After a impressive junior year Mac finally gave up his last years of eligibility and declared for the NBA draft.
Unfortunately, Mac went undrafted but he didn't let this setback hurt his persistent mindset. He secured a spot in the summer league with the Los Angeles Lakers, eventually signing with them, but was waived in October. Subsequently, he joined the South Bay Lakers, the Lakers' G League affiliate.
Mac later signed a 10-day contract with the Chicago Bulls, hovering between their NBA team and their G League affiliate before eventually returning to South Bay after his 10 days were up. Over the following years, he engaged in numerous two-way contracts with the Lakers and the Sixers, along with bouncing around different G League affiliate teams. Mac faced challenges finding a stable home within a program, often feeling passed around.
Despite the difficulties, Mac persisted, priding himself on consistency and an unwavering commitment to his dreams. While he may not have found a permanent home, Mac's perseverance paid off as he signed with the Osceola Magic in recent years and has become one of the top players in the G-League.
With Mac winning last year's dunk contest and repeating the feat this year, Mac has achieved a remarkable accomplishment joining an elite list of NBA legends to win the dunk contest back to back years. Mac did this all while not even being officially in the NBA making this even more impressive.
In a recent interview during NBA All-Star weekend, Mac delved into the concept of human experiences. He emphasized that each person's journey is unique, filled with individual stories, hardships, and successes. Mac acknowledged the criticism suggesting the NBA disrespects him, but he sees the bigger picture. The challenges he faced have shaped him into the player he is today, and he embraces his story as an integral part of his growth.
