Top Moves From the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline

Every year in the late stages of July, World Series contenders look to the trade market to find the missing piece that can help them win a world championship. This year was slightly different with over half of teams in contention, leading to a heavy sellers market with not many big names on the move. However, a small group of teams made some big moves that they hope will lead to becoming the last time standing in November. Here are the top moves of the trade deadline.

(SP) Jack Flaherty to the Dodgers - The preseason World Series favorites have been absolutely depleted of arms due to injuries from key pitchers. Tyler Glasnow, Dustin May, Clayton Kershaw, Walker Bueler, and rookie star Yoshinobu Yamamoto have all missed time with injury this season. The California native Flaherty has been amazing in half a season with Detriot, posting a 2.95 ERA and 133 K’s in 18 starts. This will most likely be a rental piece for LA, but acquiring the best starting pitcher on the market is always a great move.

(IF/OF) Jazz Chisolm Jr. to the Yankees - The Bronx bombers got off to an incredible start to begin the 2024 season, but from mid June to the All-Star break were the second worst team record wise in baseball. The lineup was being carried by Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, with little to no production from everyone else. Jazz has already gotten off to an incredible start with NY, with 4 Hr in 6 games. He provides an above average bat that can play virtually anywhere on the diamond, and will be a key piece for the Yankees down the stretch.

(RP) Tanner Scott to the Padres - San Diego once again have made some big splashes in hopes of reaching the fall classic. General Manager AJ Preller has never been shy to trade farm system talent in order to acquire a proven MLB All-Star. The 30 year old southpaw has a 1.35 ERA in 40 IP this season, and provides lock down innings for a Padres club that is the bottom half of reliever ERA this season.

Some other notable moves include Infielder Isaac Parades going from Tampa Bay to Chicago in exchange for 3B Christopher Morel, 2021 World Series hero Jorge Soler going back to Atlanta from San Francisco, & Randy Arozerena going from Tampa to Seattle, to hopefully improve on what has been an awful offense so far this season. Seattle currently ranks as the #1 pitching staff in baseball with a 3.45 ERA but 3rd last in R/G at 3.99.
