Trevor Story to have season ending shoulder surgery

After just 8 games into the MLB sesason, it looks like Trevor story is done for the year. Again.

According to the chief baseball operator, Craig Breslow, the former All-Star will undergo season-ending injury to repair a fracture of his glenoid on Friday.

This setback hits the Red Sox hard, given that Story was expected to be a huge contribution to the team after finally being fully healthy again. He was brought in to provide significant firepower in the lineup, a role that no one else on the team quite fits. Manager Alex Cora announced on Tuesday that moving forward, the Sox will adopt a platoon strategy for both second base and shortstop. Romy Gonzalez and David Hamilton are set to share duties primarily at shortstop, while Pablo Reyes and Emmanuel Valdez will split time at second base. Additionally, Ceddanne Rafaela and Vaughn Grissom are slated to rotate between both positions.

This injury is an even bigger blow to Story. The veteran from the Colorado Rockies joined the Red Sox following a massive six-year, $140 million contract signed before the 2022 season. Unfortunately, his time in Boston has been plagued by injuries. He sat out over a third of the 2022 season due to hand and heel injuries, followed by a significant absence in 2023 after undergoing UCL surgery, participating in only 43 games. Prior to these setbacks, he endured a sprained thumb in 2019, a shoulder strain in 2017, and a torn thumb ligament in 2016.

During the team's ceremonies, Story appeared with his arm in a sling and visibly struggled to hold back tears as he addressed the media postgame. "I'm frustrated. I don't really understand it," he said.

Now that his season is over, all that’s left to do is move on and look forward to the 2025 season.
