Which NFL Teams Had A Very Good Free Agency Period?

NFC

The Carolina Panthers allowed Bryce Young to be sacked over 60 times last season. That kind of punishment will make any young QB gun-shy (ask David Carr), but it's worse for a QB that has a small frame like Young. They addressed the interior by adding guards Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis. No receiver outside of Adam Thielen had over 514 receiving yards, so CAR traded a late-round pick and CB Donte Jackson for WR Diontae Johnson who can be a solid #3 WR. A’Shawn Robinson is a nice addition to play alongside Derrick Brown a D-tackle.

To top it off, the Panthers traded Brian Burns to the Giants for a second and fifth round picks. It helps recoup the haul they gave to Chicago to draft their second-year QB.

The Bears GM Ryan Poles publicly stated that he “wanted to do right by Justin Fields”. Well, since it became increasingly obvious that the Bears are looking at quarterback with their #1 overall pick, they traded Fields to the Steelers (whom Fields reportedly requested to play for). They addressed the offensive line with four additions headlined by Ryan Bates who was traded from Buffalo. D’Andre Swift will be a star out of the backfield, and getting Keenan Allen for a fourth-round pick is a bargain.

On the defensive side, Chicago resigned their star corner Jaylen Johnson, and bolstered the secondary with Kevin Byard and Jonathan Owens.

The Eagles lost some key leaders along both lines of scrimmage, but they made up some ground defensively by adding Bryce Huff and Devin White to the front seven. To replace the aforementioned Swift, they signed former division rival Saquon Barkley. Kenny Pickett was a nice experimental trade because every team in the league can use a nice backup. Plus, Pickett is only a two-year pro, so there is still more development to be made.

The Buffalo Bills lost some key elements in their secondary in former pro bowlers Jordan Poyer and Tre’Davious White. Josh Allen won’t have big stud receiver Gabe Davis to throw to but the Bills added nice slot receivers Curtis Samuel and Mack Hollins. A few good players will stay in Western New York after the Bills extended Dion Dawkins, AJ Epensa, and Taron Johnson. From the outside looking in, it seems that Buffalo will instead look to draft and develop some key spots instead of looking to hastily supplement areas hit by free agency.

Jacksonville added Gabe Davis as a nice big target for Trevor Lawrence. To go with that weapon comes protection up front, so the front office made a point to add Mitch Morse and Erza Cleveland. Arik Armstead will be a nice running mate at edge rusher opposite of the formidable Josh Allen. Devin Duvernay is an under-the-radar signing as he brings a great threat in kick returning.

Dolphins also made the cut on this list. Had to part ways with some players due to expensive cap hits (Xavien Howard in particular), they were able to fill certain holes or at least acquire stop gaps. Aaron Brewster at the center position helps a dire need at the interior offensive line. Miami signed a sideline-to-sideline tackling machine in Jordyn Brooks who is coming off three consecutive 100+ tackles performances. Jonnu Smith was the best value deal with the versatility he’ll bring to Mike McDaniels’ offense.
