As the 2024 NFL season approaches the halfway mark, it is safe to say that some squads have put the league on notice, while others are already thinking about next years draft. Here are the top stories from the Sunday slate in NFL week 8.
Washington Commanders are NFC Contdenders– The battle between the #1 & #2 overall picks was a snooze fest for three hours, and then came one of the best endings you will see all season. Jayden Daniels, the early ROY favorite was a game time decision with a Rib injury, and the commanders offense couldnt find the endzone for 59 minutes. Although the Hail Mary was amazing and will be the top of everyone discussions, I believe that one of the main conversations should be have the Commanders found their defensive footing. New Head Coach Dan Quinn has allowed 18 points or less in 5 out of 8 games so far, and has been an underrated component of this team. Sitting atop the NFC East with many questions regarding the Cowboys & the Eagles, who’s to say the Commanders can’t win the NFC East and make a playoff run. As of today they have the 2nd best record in the NFC, and are way ahead of schedule in their rebuild. This is a really fun exciting team that will grab everyones attention for years to come.
Which Teams Season Is Over? – Some teams on this list had real playoff aspirations coming into 2024, but through 8 games, we can write them off this year. The Cleveland Browns were able to win 11 games last year, but have looked awful so far. With Watson out for the year with an achilles tear (which might be a positive for the Browns), Cleveland is at a crossroads with their franchise considering they still have to pay one of the worst QB’s in the league over $100 million in guaranteed money. The New York Jets, it will always be “same old Jets”, there is nobody that can save the franchise, the team has to change names, change owners, and relocate in order to clear the awful stench that has cursed this franchise. The Panthers, Giants, & Titans all came into this season with little to no expectations, and were slated to be one of the bottom teams in the NFL, so there is no surprises here. The Raiders and Patriots also have no shot, but like the three previous teams mentioned, there wasnt much hope going into 2024.
The Detroit Lions are Super Bowl Favorites – Detroit is currently 4th in offensive points per game, despite being 29th in offensive plays run. That is truly an insane mark, they are 1st in touchdowns, 2nd in rushing touchdowns, and 4th in passing touchdowns, despite only throwing the ball 28 times per game. Ive said it before but it can not be understated how important OC Ben Johnson & DC Aaron Glenn are to this teams success, they are arguably the two best coordinators in football, and will no doubt get head coaching jobs in January. Jared Goff currently has the 4th best Odds to win MVP at +700, and this is incredible value. I mean Lamar isnt going to win it 2 years in a row, Mahomes is having a bad year for his standers, which leaves Josh Allen as his only true competition.The Lions have the 3rd best Super Bowl Odds and best Odds in the NFC, and based on the other contenders in the conference, they should be in New Orleans in Febuary.
